It has taken me ages and ages to read this book because it was a handbag book: I read it in coffee shops, in waiting rooms and on trains. I read it that way because I read the French edition, and I wanted to stop myself from consulting the dictionary every time I was stuck for a word. And even though this means I mainly read it at plot level and probably missed some of its nuances, I still loved reading it because it is a beautiful book.
En l’absence des hommes is a story of doomed love. Doomed because the story is set during WW1 when Vincent is 16, and his first love, Arthur, is destined for the carnage on the battlefront. And even though Vincent’s narrative is imbued with all the insouciance of youth, there is a melancholic tone which tells the reader that this is going to end badly.
The story begins in Paris with Vincent meeting an esteemed middle-aged man of letters called Marcel. Although never named specifically as Marcel Proust, this character resembles the great author in many ways and Vincent is suitably intimidated. At first he can’t think of anything to say, and in their early acquaintance the reader imagines the awkward youth humbled in the presence of greatness – until gradually a gentle (platonic) friendship develops and they spend their afternoons in conversation at Marcel’s salon.
In the same week of summer 1916, Vincent also meets Arthur, their housekeeper’s son, who is home on leave. Arthur is a little older than Vincent and has yearned for him in silence for years. With fate looming, he declares his love and it’s reciprocated. It’s a grand passion, but Vincent remains a bit reserved while the older man is full of tender passion.

Un récit simple, sensible et émouvant, tout en retenue. Rien de mieux que la littérature pour pouvoir redevenir cet adolescent qui découvre l'amour, l'amitié mais aussi la guerre et la laideur du monde. ( )

Mooie roman over een jongen van 16 die een platonische relatie begint met een groot Frans schrijver en tegelijkertijd een alles behalve platonische relatie met de 21-jarige zoon (een soldaat met verlof) van een dienstbode. Een en anders speelt zich af in de eerste wereldoorlog.
De 16-jarige hoofdpersoon is erg wijs voor zijn leeftijd maar dat is nauwlijks storend. Het einde kent een verrassing die in boeken van Nederlandse bibliotheken al op de binnenkant van de voorkaft wordt verklapt. Sla die binnenkant dus over. ( )

Dans la foulée de l'"Arrière saison", j'ai lu ce livre, le premier de Philippe Besson. Son ambiance et son intrigue me rappellent un peu celles d'un "Diable au corps". L'insolence intelligente et pure d'un adolescent de 16 ans, sa découverte de l'amour, du plaisir, mais aussi de l'amitié, de la douleur, de la perte. L'évocation de la Grande Guerre est puissante, puisqu'elle passe par la douleur et les cauchemars de l'être aimé. Cette horreur de la guerre s'oppose à la vison d'un autre ami de l'adolescent, grand écrivain, qui observe la vie, séparé d'elle par une distance nostalgique, une mondanité pathétique, une blessure lointaine mais dont la douleur reste latente.
La sincérité, l'honnêteté presque excessive, l'innocence de l'adolescent rendent toutes ces blessures plus aiguës, ce qu'aucun autre narrateur "adulte" n'aurait pu faire. Le jeune homme de 16 ans sort de cette aventure grandi, trop rapidement muri, déjà résigné car conscient qu'il ne rencontrera plus jamais l'intensité vécue pendant ces quelques jours. C'est un livre bouleversant, encore une fois très juste ; son écriture est dénuée d'artifices, elle permet une surprenante intimité entre le lecteur et les personnages. Un chef d'œuvre ? ( )

Summer of 1916 in Paris. Sixteen-year old Vincent meets Marcel, a famous writer in his mid-forties and befriends him. It soon becomes a love affair of the mind. At the same time, during one intense week, Vincent and Arthur, the 21-year old soldier son of Vincent's governess, become lovers. Vincent keeps going from one man in his life to the other, keeping the affairs separate. Then he is separated from both of them but starts talking about Arthur to Marcel and about Marcel to Arthur in his letters. The final twist took me by surprise. I've been reading this book intermittently for a couple of weeks, often while travelling in public transport, partly because I didn't want to devour the book in one sitting. Beautifully written, captivating, intense little book. ( )
