"The prayer book is our Jewish diary of the centuries, a collection of prayers composed by generations of those who came before us, as they endeavored to express the meaning of their lives and their relationship to God. The prayer book is the essence of the Jewish soul." My People's Prayer Book provides diverse and exciting commentaries to the traditional liturgy, written by some of today's most respected scholars and teachers from all perspectives of the Jewish world. They explore the text from the perspectives of ancient Rabbis and modern theologians, as well as feminist, halakhic, medieval, linguistic, biblical, Chasidic, mystical, and historical perspectives. This stunning work, an empowering entryway to the spiritual revival of our times, enables all of us to claim our connection to the heritage of the traditional Jewish prayer book. It helps rejuvenate Jewish worship in today's world, and makes its power accessible to all. The My People's Prayer Book series belongs on the library shelf of every home, every synagogue--every sanctuary of prayer. Introductions tell the reader what to look for in the prayer service, as well as how to truly use the commentaries, to search for--and find--meaning in the prayer book… (mehr)

NO OF PAGES: 149 SUB CAT I: Prayer SUB CAT II: SUB CAT III: DESCRIPTION: Vol. 1 examines the oldest and best-known of Jewish prayers. Often the first prayer memorized by children and the last prayer recited on a deathbed, the Sh'ma frames a Jewish life.NOTES: Using Maimonides's writings and a wealth of research, Heschel has fashioned the moving story of the great medieval philosopher and has evoked the passion and richness of Jewish life amid the colors and spectacles of the Arabic civilization of 12th century Spain. Heschel has also undertaken a careful critique of Maimonides's thought, focusing on his conflict with Aristotelian tradition and on his magnum opus, The Guide for the Perplexed. This sympathetic biography is an essential aid to the study of Maimonides and his influence on Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions.Donated by David Daniels. The following comments apply to each volume in the series:

The book is set up in much the same way as a Talmud. A passage from the prayer or prayer service is written in the center of the page, with commentaries written around it. Each commentary, by a recognized biblical scholar approaches the passage from a different perspective; historic, feminist, traditional, etc. One can then follow the a comment which interests him/her. The Hebrew is translated into contemporary English.

The basic introduction is the same in each book. Each volume is, therefore, complete on its own, so one can pick and chose amongst them and still get the full impact of the subject.

Highly recommended to those open to a diversity of opinion and analysis. ( )

Wonderful resource for Jewish ritual and prayer. Along with keeping Shabbat, the daily recitation of the Sh'ma, morning and evening, is one of the most fundamental of Jewish practices. ( )
