For me, it was great to get back to Latin American literature. It has always been my favorite. "The Shadow of the Strongman" did not disappoint. Martin Luis Guzman weaves a fascinating, if at times violent, portrait of Mexican politics in the early 1920's. Based on his personal participation in the historical events, he presents a fast-paced story that none-the-less reveals the sad, complex, and moving political events of the times. But the story is much more than history; it is an eloquent, personal and skilled portrayal of the principle actors of the times. Even if a reader lacks a knowledge of, or in fact an interest in, the events of those times, it is a worthwhile and enjoyable investment of time. ( )

"La Sombra del Caudillo" es la mejor obra literaria que produjo la Revolución, aquí no hay anécdotas, aquí hay historia, se presenta el panorama urbano y político con sus aguas turbias, tan turbias que semejan lodo.
El Caudillo es Obregón, está descrito físicamente. Ignacio Aguirre —ministro de la guerra—es la suma de Adolfo de la Huerta y del general Serrano; Hilario Jiménez —ministro de gobernación— es Plutarco Elías Calles, Axkaná representa en la novela la consciencia revolucionaria. Ejerce con ella la función reservada en la tragedia griega al coro.

Reconozco en "La sombra del caudillo" una novela extraordinaria, bien planeadita, de una prosa riquísima (por no mencionar el tremendo valor histórico que representa). Sin embargo, en lo personal, no me gustó tanto, no la disfruté tanto como tal vez debí hacerlo. ( )
