Pitching in for Eubie was important for her sister, Lily. She wanted to help out just like the rest the family. That showed maturity on Lily's part wanting to help others. She also displayed some of her best qualities and interests. The story was a close knit family story. It gave the imagery that family is always everything and will do everything to make one succeed in life no matter what it takes. ( )

Pitching in for Eubie is a book about a young girl who wants to help her sister. Her sister just got accepted into college with a scholarship. The only thing is it will cost three thousand dollars for her room and board. Her family decides they all will pick up jobs to help pay for it. Her mom goes into sewing, her dad helps out a man, her brother has a paper route, and Eubie does babysitting. Lily is young and doesn't know what she can do. She tries to help her mom and do things around the house but she doesn't feel like it is enough. She puts up an ice tea stand but it doesn't work out. She tried to get bait for the fishermen but the worms dry out. She is worried she will never help her sister. The lady who her mom was sewing the dress for needs someone to watch over her mom. Lily stands right up and tells her she would do it. The lady said she would pay her five dollars an hour. Lily finally is glad she can help her sister. ( )

Great moral to this story. A young girl is trying to find ways to help her family come up with tuition money for her older sister. Great read to kids to let them know that no matter how young/little they are, there are always ways to help out! ( )

Summary:
This story is a family whose daughter, Eubie, got accepted to attend the freshman class in college with a four-year scholarship. However, the college needs $3,000 for room and board. The whole family pitches in doing side-jobs to earn money.

Personal Reaction:
I liked this book because it was simple enough to elaborate on and be able to ask open-ended questions and to get creative with. It is a great story to teach children the importance of pulling together, doing your part, and pitching in.

Classroom Extension Ideas:
1. I could have the class think of something that they could put on the classroom wish list (such as a computer or classroom pet). Then, the children could come up with ideas on how the class is going to earn the money for that item.

2. I would do an activity that emphasizes the importance of doing your part. The activity that I would choose would be one that would not work unless everyone pitched in. We would first do the activity as a whole and then without one person to show how big of a difference it makes to be missing the one link. We would then talk about how this is important in everyday life. ( )

19. I liked the book “Pitching in for Eubie” by Jerdine Nolan for a number of reasons. The characters are very believable, as the story focuses on a child’s efforts to help raise money for her sister to attend college. The writing flowed well as it took the reader through the various ways in which Lilly tried raising money for her sister, in addition to the ways in which Eubie’s parents felt burdened by the fact that they could not support their daughter’s education. The illustrations enhance the story, as they do an excellent job of portraying the family’s emotions through the detail in the family’s facial expressions and body language. The main message of this book shows the determination of a family to support one another in times of financial difficulty. ( )
