Change is a natural part of growing up. Bodies change, moods change, voices change, personalities change. But what happens when the changes aren't natural but super natural? And what if they can be used for both good and evil? That's the dilemma confronting Yale in Karen Rivers' edgy, compelling thriller, Y in the Shadows. The kids at school have been ignoring Yale forever. It's not because she's stupid, or a jerk. She's just the kind of girl people look right through, as though she were invisible. Yale's not too thrilled with that. But now she's discovered something about herself, something wonderful and terrifying. After all the years of feeling invisible, Yale discovers she has the power to actually be invisible -- the power to disappear. She has the power to move undetected among the very people who've made her feel like she didn't exist. Only this time, she's listening. Watching. Planning. Ultimately, Yale finds herself having to choose whether she'll use her ability to hurt or help someone very close to her...… (mehr)

"I enjoyed this one more than X in Flight [review here] because it felt like it had more of a purpose. The writing was much better, especially in terms of changing POVs. The story felt like it had a beginning, middle-ish, and end. There wasn t as much swearing as the last one, whcih was nice because before it made me feel uncomfortable and it didn t feel true to the characters. Yes, teens swear& but not all teens swear excessively.[return][return]This book felt more like it hit the age-range it was intended for. Although there is talk of kissing, menstration, sex, and dealings with rape, I feel that this is an appropriate book for 14 readers. The only thing that bothered me was (SPOILER ALERT!!!) that with the rape scene, while it wasn t explicit, the aftermath was not handled. At all I mean. The character decided not to press charges OR tell her parents, which I thought wasn t the correct action to advocate.[return][return]http://www.monniblog.com/2009/02/y-in-the-shadows/" ( )

Reviewed by my daughter. She liked it but recommends it for older teens. Full review: http://www.canadianauthors.net/r/rivers_karen/y_in_the_shadows.php
