'The Race' puts a fun twist on the original fable, 'The Turtoise and the Hare'. This is an adorable story about Turtoise and Hare, and the adventure they endure on their way to New York at two opposite speed levels. Turtoise believes he will win at a slow and steady pace, while Hare is confident he will win going at the fasted speed. On his way to New York, Hare sees multiple countries, and experiences many various types transportation with multiple hardships, while Turtoise cruises along contently on his boat. Hare arrives in New York in second place behind Turtoise, who confidently stated in the beginning that slow and steady wins the race, and it absolutely does in this book. This book is great for a social studies lesson, with discussing different types of transportation. It is also a great discussion book for teaching children that being cocky does not get you anywhere in life, as well as never under-estimating or judging someone else. Lastly, the rhyming words are great for developing young readers' rhyming skills. ( )

The Race is a cute and modern retelling of the classic Tortoise and Hare fable. Both are in a race to New York where they use boats, planes, and hot air balloons to travel. In the end, the Tortoise still proves that “slow and steady wins the race.”
Although the text is quite simple, the rhyming makes it more entertaining to read. However, the brilliantly unique illustrations are what kept me truly engaged. The moral remains true to Aesop’s fable as it teaches the importance of patience and perseverance. ( )

Aesop's classic fable, The Tortoise and the Hare, is here reinterpreted by Caroline Repchuk, who fleshes out the tale, transforming it into the story of a global race. I was distinctly unimpressed by Repchuk's rhyming narrative here, finding it clunky and uninspiring. Alison Jay's colorful and engaging artwork, with its distinctive "crackled" appearance, was a pleasure, but it was not enough to save The Race. There are better adaptations of this fable to be found - notably, Caroline Castle's The Hare and the Tortoise - so I would advise other Aesop devotees to give this one a miss. ( )

Hare likes speed but Tortoise prefers the slow and steady way. In the end, Tortoise wins the race to New York leaving Hare to realize that patience and diligence is the way to go. ( )
