Foreword
Although a century has passed since the Zulu War of 1879, its dramatic events and the courage displayed by men of both sides have continued to exercise a peculiar fascination which has not been eclipsed by the much greater conflicts that have occurred since.

A hundred years ago the biggest threat to the security of the British Empire was believed to be the expansion, outside Europe, of French and above all Russian influence.
