Samuel Harrison Smith, a struggling newspaper publisher, and Mr. Jefferson do eventually connect. The political heart of the story makes a gradual appearance as we follow the correspondence between Smith and his fiancee, Margaret Bayard, during their years-long, taxing courtship, and as we become acquainted with what it was like to live in Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. in the earliest days of the Republic.
