Tour of Duty, by John Dos Passos (read 26 Aug 2010) An account of what war correspondent Dos Possos saw in islands of the Pacific in the latter part of World War II, and in the Phillippines in 1945. Also in Germany just after the war, including a day or two at the Nurnberg war crimes trial. He is pretty pessimistic, but did say we should be helping Europe and I presume he was pleased when we did just that via the Marshall Plan. His writing is lucid and a joy to read. It just did not seem the book was all that pertinent today, but as a view of the world in 1945 it is revealing, and I do not regret reading it.. ( )
