Summary: This is a biography about Clara Barton who was a teacher, nurse, and founder of the American Red Cross. The beginning of the book talks about her childhood. Clara was the youngest of five children and she learned a lot from her older siblings who were protective over her. She was a very smart little girl and enjoyed going to school and learning new things. At age seventeen she became a teacher and several years later she opened her own school in New Jersey. When she became tired of teaching she started working in a patent office in Washington D.C. Abraham Lincoln helped her to keep her job there when women were not receiving fair treatment. Clara then started going from battlefield to battlefield helping wounded soldiers. She took them food, clothing, and other supplies as well as treated their injuries. The soldiers began calling her the Angel of the Battlefield. Clara first started working for the International Red Cross while she was in Switzerland and decided the organization needed to come to America. She finally founded the American Red Cross in May 1881.

Review: I thought that this book was well written and engaging. It provided a lot of interesting information about Clara Barton and her work. I like that the author included information about her years spent as a teacher and not only her work as a nurse. The information was presented in a way that was interesting and easy to understand. This book would be useful for someone who was doing research on Clara Barton. There were a lot of pictures and photographs that supported the information in the book which provided another resource for readers. ( )

This biography is about Clara Barton, her life and the many ways she was viewed as a hero by many. This book gives information from her childhood and the many volunteer and job positions that she had throughout her life.

I found Clara Barton to be a true pioneer for women. She was so dedicated and determined to her calling and did not take "no" for an answer easily. I had no idea that she was the founder of the American Red Cross. Her feats were tremendous not only for women but for those who were in need.

I would really like to have children create a timeline with the specific events that Clara Barton did during her lifetime. I think this would help them develop an appreciation for exactly what she was able to accomplish throughout her lifetime. I would also have them research the American Red Cross and find out more information about what it is they do and who and how they help those individuals
