A decadent rock star, feminist commentator, and sugar daddy's mistress share a place in the Hamptons and... things happen. Unabashedly trashy, and I loved it. The author's next book was supposed to be "Bikini Wax" but he just came out with "The Strip," so I'm not sure if the title changed. ( ) Diese Rezension wurde für LibraryThing Member Giveaways geschrieben. A fast read about wealth, fame, sex, booze, drugs, and the pursuit of happiness. Three women, Billie (rock star), kellyanne (actress) and Liza (talk-show feminist) share a summer in the upscale Hamptons. It's a trashy read and moves interestingly enough through the story. Toward the end it began to lose my interest, or I should say, earn my scorn. The women never seemed to learn anything of value - - Billie continues on with her dangerous drug life, Kellyanne rather amazingly ends up with a nice man and his child even though she doesn't seem to get any smarter. The exception is perhaps Liza, and I would have liked a good ending for her. But no . . . Tan Lines comes with an endorsement blurb on the front from Jackie Collins and dedications inside to Harold Robins, Sidney Sheldon and a few others. If you’ve read any books by the above authors then you will enjoy this novel. UK Elle calls it “Sexy beach trash of the highest order”. Tan Lines led off its publicity with a YouTube videotaping people’s reactions to the opening line. I too was intrigued by the first line, but by the end of the first chapter, I found myself chapter hopping. J.J. Salem seems to want to shock the reader with as much lurid sexual detail as possible. For this reader, the characters were shallow – but maybe that was the intention - and the plot skimpy. I grew tired of the drinking and doping, the celebrity and product references. But on the other hand, if you’re looking for a raunchy read at the beach, this one might heat up your summer. But it just didn’t float my boat. I have to admit, I was a little weary of this book when I first picked it up--how enjoyable would a book that actually labeled itself as a "beach read" really be? In my experience, beach reads can either turn out to be insipid pieces of fluff or fast moving enthralling stories. I hoped for the later--and dreaded the former--as I picked it up and jumped right in. Tan Lines follows three unlikely friends (Liza, Kellyanne and Billie) vacationing together in a Hampton's beach house. Although their stories can be a little extreme at times, it does not stop you from becoming interested in their lives--a must-have for a beach read to be anything other than a time-killer. I would describe this book as trashy, but absorbing. keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen
In this sizzling debut, J.J. Salem relentlessly lays bare the private behavior of public people in the fast-paced media spotlight. From Manhattan to the Hamptons, from Miami to Hollywood, the settings are larger than life, but the intimate realities hit straight to the heart. Listeners will find some part of themselves in the guilt, passions, fears, and longings of these dynamic women. Ambition and talent, sex, and seduction - their lives are full of it all - but they are on a crash course with destiny during one explosive summer. Liza: She slays rival media commentators with her firebrand feminist spin, enjoying a lucrative career as the millennium's new Naomi Wolf. Yet she's falling into all the old traps she cautions other women to avoid. Kellyanne: She waits tables and plays mistress to a rich developer, holding out for her big break as an actress. But why are the phenomenal looks that were supposed to take her all the way leading her to the edge of disaster? Billie: She rocks the indie music scene with her nose pressed against the glass, hoping for a shot at real success in a cutthroat industry. Sex is candy, drugs are fuel, people are disposable, and looking out for number one is the only way she knows how to live. Tan Lines is an addictive story that exposes the illusions of glamour, the dark side of success, and the elusiveness of love. Thrill by thrill and sin by sin, it's told with savvy insight and searing prose. Listen with sunscreen. Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |
