Franz Delitzsch maintains that throughout the Bible's stories and poetry emerges an extensive picture of human nature - humans acting and reacting in various situations. An examination of the Bible, then, may form the basis of a well-defined system of psychology. Delitzsch contends that a study of Biblical psychology should have as its purpose to bring out the views of Scripture regarding the nature, the life, and life-destinies of the soul, as they are determined in the history of salvation. He thoroughly examines the relationships of human to human, human to God, and human to self as viewed through the lens of the Bible. Major headings include pre-existence, creation, the fall, man's natural condition, the regeneration, death, and resurrection and consummation. Under these headings he discusses an array of topics of interest to modern readers, including personality, the soul, and health and sickness.… (mehr)

this book is a monumental work on the subject of 'Psychology proper' that is, the essential makeup of our human nature and being, body, soul, spirit. What makes us who we are - our Psyche, our soul and identity. It traces this through from a Biblical and systematic theological standpoint - and as a study it has probably not been surpassed in its comprehensiveness and in its day was a seminal work. Today it still has great value. Though readers like me may not find themselves agreeing with all that is said by the author, all that is said is worthy of serious consideration. This is theology of a high order, and Delitzsch has with this work put himself among the ranks of worthy theologians. ( )
