Paul Jennings' Unreal is a great tool to engage the male audience in any classroom. While some stories may have the females squirming in discomfort they will also have the boys engaged, giggling and wanting more. The stories a written in the point of view of a 10-14 yr old Australian which makes perfect ties to geography and literacy. The teacher can create a lesson that highlights differences in the Australian dialect. Showing the unfamiliar/foreign words, the teacher can highlight how different cultures have different words for similar things. The students can then create a short narrative incorporating these new words as if they were an Australian student. best suited to grades 4 and up. ( )

Quirky tales for Paul Jennings. These books got me through a few of my awkward years I tell you. Even kids in these stories is the underdog or the want you want to cheer for. There is often twists and turns in every story and he also has a way with coming up with a killer ending. For 7 to 13 year olds. ( )

Any story collection with titles like 'Without a Shirt', 'Lucky Lips', 'Cow Dung Custard' and 'Wunderpants' is sure to attract some attention. There are eight 'surprising stories' in this first book by an Australian writer and they are certainly very bizarre and jockey. They ought to appeal to most tastes in the upper junior/lower secondary range and read aloud well. The custard in question is a fatal manure mixture created by Greg's dad, which brings horrific consequences to the whole neighborhood, but in the and it's an ill-wind that proves lucrative! As for the underpants, they're a home-spun creation fabricated out of a scrap of material printed with a fairy design. They don't half make a pet mouse run through ...! Category: Middle/Secondary. . ...., Puffin, D1.50. Ages 10 to 14.
