I like this way of talking about how pregnancy works, because kids always wonder about their belly buttons. I also like that it shows how humans are the same as other mammals in this respect, and just puts our own species in context of the whole animal kingdom. Great illustrations and a good concept. (I'm surprised I haven't seen it on the banned books lists yet, since there's an illustration of a human baby breastfeeding and we know how the sight of a breast makes people lose it.) ( ) I have mixed feelings about this book. The title was interesting to me because everyone has wondered why we have a belly button. The book answers this question, but it also includes some additional information that may be a little bit too much for some children. I did like the fact that the book explores the similarities among mammals in how they carry and care for their babies. This book is best suited for children in grades second through fifth. Although children as young as pre-kindergarten may be curious about the origin and function of their belly button, this book gets pretty technical about mammal pregnancies. I did like the glossary that is in the back of the book. The definitions help to elaborate on the terms that were used in the story. The illustrations are vivid and very life like. Again, this may not be suitable for younger children. For example, one illustration shows how a mother pig nurses her babies the same way that a human nurses her babies using her mammary glands. This book could be used in a science or health class to explain some aspects of the human body, but the maturity of the class will need to be taken into consideration. This book was very interesting to me because I learned many things that I didn't know. Children are always fascinated with belly buttons, so this would be a nice book for parents to read to their child. This book answer many questions that children may want to know about either animals or humans. It shows the difference between animal and humans belly buttons, and how they are alike.
