Here is the amazing true-life story of Charles Fipke, the mining exploration geologist responsible for discovering the vast new diamond fields in Canada's North. Now available in paperback, Fine Into Ice follows Fipke in his travels through the fast-paced, cutthroat world of mineral exploration in exotic locales around the world -- from the jungles of New Guinea to the savannahs of South Africa to the rainforests of the Amazon to the Arctic tundra. Fipke is a modern-day adventure -- an Indiana Jones of mining exploration -- obsessed with the quest for minerals. His is a complex personality combining a deep understanding of the science behind mineral exploration with an obsessive drive for adventure. The story culminates in Fipke's staking of the multi-billion-dollar Eraki diamond claim in Canada's Northwest Territories, a claim now being developed into one of the largest diamond mines outside South Africa. Fipke's biography will amaze and inform anyone interested in a life lived passionately in pursuit of a singular dream.… (mehr)

This was a great read! Charles Fipke was a geologist, explorer, prospector and inventor. A brilliant man with little fear and an appetite for adventure. He was responsible for the discovery of diamonds in Canada's Northwest Territories. This was the part of the book that interested me most, but his entire life was fascinating. He worked in New Guinea, both Papua and Indonesia. He also worked in Brazil, British Columbia and Yemen. He started his own mineral analysis business with his own patented techniques. He also had five children and a wife who was, for many years, a true partner and a pillar of strength for him.

The book is based mostly on interviews with Mr. Fipke, his family and his associates. For those who like documentation, this won't be for you. But if you like history, science and a true story adventure, you will love it. ( )

This is a captivating true-life adventure about exploration and discovery. As a geologist, I know the geoscience is real and of the type that would be used for these type searches. The writing is great, almost firsthand so the excitement comes through. One aspect I like about this book is that the success of the searches was due of the used applicable geoscience and clear thinking, following the high motivation of Mr. Fipke. The success was not just luck but the product of these two factors, motivation and clear technical thinking.

This is a great read for anyone thinking about a science career and how it often begins evolves. ( )
