The introduction of the secret ballot is thought to be an essential prerequisite of a genuine political transition and many donor countries and NGOs assure us that it leads inexorably to democracy and transparency. But the social history of the secret ballot, a fascinating cultural phenomenon, has rarely been investigated, till now. While it may indeed offer opportunities for broader participation in politics, on some occasions, its introduction limited the electorate and excluded certain groups, while in others it precipitated violence and social discord. Drawing on examples from Mexico, Africa, France, the USA, India and Iran, "Cultures of Voting" is an innovative analysis of the cultural history of the West's democratic norms and practices and their imposition on other societies. ( )
Questions the universitality of the secret ballot as an emanation of the particular historical environment of Western societies. Using a wide range of examples from Britain, the U.S, India, Tanganyika, Indonesia, Corsica, Mexico, Benin and Iran, and taken from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the authors show how different "cultures of voting" were produced by the introduction of the secret ballot...Offers a new perspective on the study of democracy, drawn from several intern-disciplinary approaches to this central issue of contemporary politics.
We assume that voting by secret ballot is an essential and fundamental principle of representative democracy, but the social history of the secret ballot has rarely been investigated, until now. Voting by secret ballot is a surprisingly recent phenomenon in the West. While it may indeed offer opportunities for broader political participation, its introduction has sometimes limited the electorate, excluding certain groups, even precipitating violence. This original and thought-provoking volume questions the universality of the supposed link between voting secrecy and individual political freedom. Case studies from around the world and various historical eras combine anthropology, political theory, and social history to good effect. The result is an innovative analysis of the cultural history of the West's democratic norms and their imposition on other societies. Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |
