"Experience the wonders of human creativity in GARDNER'S ART THROUGH THE AGES: A GLOBAL HISTORY, 16th Edition! A grand tour of the world's most celebrated works from the Stone Age to the modern era, this introductory text has been a classroom favorite for 85 years. Every chapter includes rich and compelling discussions of pivotal art works, periods and geographies in art history, as well as new artists and art forms. Of course, the bold illustrations on the pages look almost as good as the real thing, especially when you use the unique Scale feature to imagine a work's stature from the artist's point of view. And to keep your course success in focus, the text offers Quick Review Captions and Big Picture Overviews, as well as an optional ebook that enables you to zoom in on fine details of paintings, sculptures, and priceless art forms of all kinds."--Amazon.com… (mehr)

Art History - Ancient through 20th century

This was one of a small collection, used at least partly as a reference for crossword puzzle solving. ( )

I wasn't expecting to enjoy this as much as I am -- perhaps because it's a well-established textbook, I anticipated loads of information but dull writing. What a surprise! This is amazingly informative AND engaging. It's enormous, of course, which makes comfortable reading a bit of a challenge* ... but no complaints about the book's contents. And I'm only up to the Etruscan chapter ...

* unless you enjoy abdominal divots. I don't. ;^) ( )

I used it before as a student and afterwards as a teacher.
Even though there are fortunately some other good books on the subject this one has been the best one. Each new edition has even enhanced all the good qualities in this book.

It includes not only all cultures and periods described in a clear and thorough way, but also a really good bibliography that has helped me a lot while trying to find a book about an artis, period or culture. This bibliography is really superior to any other introduction to Art History. ( )

A classic for anyone wishing to study art history. My husband and I used it in college and our son used our book 20 years later to do the same (even though new editions have come out since them). We have also used it throughout the years to research specific artists or works.
