It only lacked a few more maps of the allied counter offensive, and prehapes some more concluding notes. very informative. ( ) This interesting little book contrasts the successes of the German and Allied offensives of 1918. Evans give some attention to the evolving thinking in offensive doctrine that developed in the German army, dependent largely on more complex and specialized artillery and infantry tactics. He shows that the Allied innovations were similar, with addition of the adoption of greater reliance on air power and the development of an armored arm as well-a combined arms approach. Evans does a good job of providing a simple overview of the German Kaiserschlact in the spring of 1918, and Allied summer offensives. The narrative is often broken with maddeningly long block quotations, when what is probably needed is a little more narrative guidance. Even so, this is a worthwhile addition to my WWI library. At the outset of 1918 Germany faced certain defeat as a result of Allied technical innovation in tanks and aircraft, and the American entry into the war. Victory could only be gained by the immediate application of overwhelming force in new tactical form; the 'fire-waltz' artillery barrage and the storm-trooper infantry attack. 1918 examines both the Germans' tactics and the Allies' preferred solution to fighting this war, the combination of artillery, tanks, infantry and aircraft, and argues that this reached a level of sophistication in command and control never before achieved. The war of attrition was far from over, but as more Americans arrived in France the ghastly cost became affordable. For the Germans, it became a question of whether they could negotiate an armistice before their armies were utterly destroyed. Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |
