Written with R. M. Patterson's characteristic sharp wit and observation, this classic tale chronicles the year he spent battling frigid temperatures and wild waters along the Nahanni River in Canada's Northwest Territories. Patterson originally travelled to the North with hopes of finding gold, and clues to the mysterious disappearance of earlier prospectors. Instead, he fell in love with the landscape, and through his meticulously recorded journals and hauntingly beautiful photographs he introduced the now-famous Nahanni River to the world. Patterson's bestselling first book is now back in print and ready to take readers down the treacherous and challenging waters of the Nahanni River once again.… (mehr)

The author, a well-educated man from England, after a meeting with his father whom he hasn’t seen in 20+ years, is convinced to leave his job at a bank in England to seek adventure where he may find it. He drops tools, leaves his mother behind, and heads for Alberta to homestead. Ever a man to seek adventure, much like fellow countryman and author William Francis Butler, he heads out with partner Gordon Mathews for the Nahanni River to trap for furs, and perhaps look for gold. His descriptive writing is exemplary, evocative, humorous, and not without wit although his descriptions of hunting for meat and fur are dark and disturbing (“… the third one landed right where it would do most good and stretched him dead in the snow.”) It’s a great read. Exciting first-person narrative of the journeys made into the wilderness of Northern British Columbia from the NorthWest Territories. The first trip was a visit to the legendary South Nahanni River and later the efforts with a partner, to discover the source of the Nahanni. Prospecting, hunting and fishing are described with supporting photography. An absolute must-read if you like tales of the north and early travellers by canoe. ( )

AWESOME BOOK!

I purchased Dangerous River: Adventure on the Nahanni to use as research for my 2005 release, The River, an exciting and terrifying techno-thriller that takes place on the Nahanni River.

I found Dangerous River to be invaluable to me, and after reading it, I yearn to travel to the Nahanni River to see this wonderful part of Canada.

I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a true Canadian adventure. The photos take you back to a simpler life, and the author's humor and attention to detail are entertaining.
