Glam Slam, Thank U Ma'am., July 13, 2002

I hated "Lovesexy" when it first came out in the spring of 1988. Following the tremendous "Sign O the Times," I thought "Lovesexy" was a big disappointment and was too quirky for my taste. But, as a stand-alone album, this CD is a fine effort that has its strokes of brilliance. Yes, there's the Top Ten "Alphabet St.," but my singles of choice are the severely underrated "Glam Slam" and the beautiful yet underrated "I Wish U Heaven." Other funked-up gems are the title track and "Dance On." Prince never releases the album you'd expect him to make. He's always two steps ahead of the game and continues to challenge us with interesting material. Again, I didn't care for "Lovesexy" when it came out, but over the years it grew on me and it's now become one of my favorite Prince albums.

He's Done Better, February 8, 2001
Reviewer: Thomas Magnum (NJ, USA) - See all my reviews

Prince had recorded two albums at the time of the release of Love Sexy. One was by the good Prince (Love Sexy) and the other by the bad Prince (The Black Album). The story goes that the good Prince won out and Prince released Love Sexy. The album is full of positive notions about love and God. The problem is that the unreleased Black Album(it was released in a limited edition several years later) was far superior to Love Sexy. "Alphabet St." has a nice funky groove with a guitar riff reminiscent of "Kiss" and is a good song, but the album doesn't offer much else. One would be better served to find a copy of the Black Album as that contains some of the darkest, deepest, funkiest grooves Prince has ever committed to tape. Love Sexy just doesn't match up the high standards that he had set with his previous 80's releases.

16 Years Later Still Sounds Good, January 20, 2006
Reviewer: Reggie L. Mattocks (Upper Marlboro, MD) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
After almost sixteen years of having still the original LP and CD as well, this was still an album that should have been not a great album, but a good album considering the success of the previous release Sign of the Times. Like "Around The World In A Day" which musically was genius, and went against the grain of the success of Purple Rain, Lovesexy boasted some funky, funky songs. Eye No, the first track gets you from the start of the CD. I wasn't overly thrilled with Alphabet St, and figured he released it as a single just for Pop Radio Crossover heads. However, undoubtedly, the best song on the album and one of the best songs I've heard and seen him perform live is "Anna Stesia". Anybody who's heard this played live knows exactly what I mean. I still don't think Prince still gets his due as one of the meanest guitarists in Rock & Roll or in the music business period. I always hear about Eric Clapton, Eddie Van Halen, etc when guitarists names are being mentioned but Prince can hold his own with any one of them. And When 2 R In Love continued Prince's domination on Urban R&B radio with his smooth and sultry ballads. When buying Prince albums there are two things I have to have, funky tracks, and delicious ballads. Lovesexy had both. The only complaint in which I didn't give it 5 stars was the album pieceing together all the songs as one continuous track. That was and still is irritating. Glad Anna Stesia was put on a live album some years later cuz I could never get that song by itself. With technology the way it is you would think by now someone would be selling this particular CD with the tracks separated individually. Oh Well! Still great CD
