A troubled American woman travels to a small Ontario town, determined to find the mother she has never known. As she searches through dusty records and stirs up old memories among those around her, three young people emerge from the mists of the past…a beautiful woman named Jenny, a shy local boy named Russell, and a dark-eyed painter named Tom, who changes the course of Jenny and Russell’s lives. Historical reality and conjecture are skilfully interwoven with intrigue and suspense as these three move unwittingly toward tragedy.… (mehr)

Tom Thompson was a Canadian artist just gaining recognition when his body was found in Canoe Lake. There has long been speculation as to whether his death was accidental, suicide or murder. And, if not accidental, what was the motive? Roy MacGregor has a family connection to the Tom Thompson story. This book is based on information he was able to piece together, and it has caused a rift in his family. This book is fiction, and the true story remains unknown -- probably always will.

The story is interesting even if you know nothing of Tom Thompson (I knew very little myself). Set in northern Ontario during World War I, this is a story of life and love and friendship. A second story line runs forty years after Thompson's death as a woman tries to determine if he was her biological father; and if so, who was her mother? Mr. MacGregor has managed to write a story that has a lot of action as well as complex characters...too often, it seems, you get one or the other. A very intriguing, and enduring, mystery. ( )

I loved this book. I know it was a fictional retelling of the story but I fell like the author did a great job on intertwining the fact and the fiction. While I would have loved a different end I feel that this one brought some really good closer to the story. At first I had some struggles getting it but once the story began to jump back to times and places it became much more interesting! I would highly recommend this book to any one who likes a good mystery and any Thompson enthusiasts! ( )
