La ciutat de Barcelona des dels preparatius de l'Exposició Universal del 1888 i la inauguració de la del 1929. Veiem aquest important període de la història de Barcelona de la mà d'Onofre Bouvila, un xicotet que deixa el seu poble per fugir de la misèria i se'n va a Barcelona que està acabant les obres per poder inaugurar l'exposició de 1888, el Parc de la Ciutadella és un formiguer d'obrers treballant deseperadament per poder complir els terminis i l'alcalde Rius i Taulet fa mans i mànigues per aconseguir-ho. La societat de l'època és dura, les classes socials estàn desbetllant-se i els anarquistes extenen la seva ideologia, aquest és le començament de la narració. Amb empenta i sense massa escrúpols l'Onofre Bouvila escala en la societat fins a convertir-se en un prohom de la ciutat, ric a més no pogué però rebutjat per la burgesia establerta de fa temps. El relat és sumament interessant i es llegeix amb avidesa, no és extrany la fama de la novel.la d'Eduardo Mendoza. ( )
