A beautifully illustrated brief biography. Good for roughly ages 6-10 ( )

Louisa was born to a family who believed that both girls and boys deserved an education and their opinions mattered, but the people didn't agree. Her father was a school teacher and due to his beliefs parents began to take their kids out of his school. This made his school close and they were forced to move, the Alcotts moved several times over the course of Louisas life. Louisa loved writing and eventually became famous for her writing. This was a good book, but I didn't love it as much as some of the others I read. It seemed a little boring and didn't catch my attention as much. ( )

Louisa May Alcott was not only a creative person but a genuinely good person who loved and worked hard for her family. Though much of the beginning of the book focused on her family moving from one place to another it set the scene for how great her success was. Though Louisa always wanted to write she didn't feel she could make a living by writing stories. After a series of jobs her publisher asked her to write a story for girls and thus "Little Women" was born. The success with this book was able to bring monetary comfort to her family. She spent her life loving family and people in general.
I enjoyed this biography, the illustrations were beautiful and set the scene for how Louisa may have seen her life as a young child and into adulthood. My favorite part was learning more about how "Little Women" was written and where her inspiration came from. As one of my favorite books this was most interesting to me. This book talks a great deal about having unconventional views for the time and sticking by them regardless of what others think which is such an important lesson for young children to learn from figures of the past. Very sweet book. A nice way of writing about a writer that is actually stimulating. Louisa's story gives great hope to readers who are possibly struggling because of parents who are a little 'dreamy' or who do not naturally fit into capitalist lifestyles. I think through our lives we have all known people like this. Also brings up interesting issues of the time such as the Civil War and general illnesses of the time. Life was more fleeting than it is today and realistically this was not so long ago. Although the story and the illustrations are quite charming, I think my favorite part of the book is in the last few pages where the reader can find a section of quotes from Alcott on different times of her life, some poetry of hers, a 'fun fact' section where is gives more details about the commune her father tries to start, and most deliciously, it gives her recipe for New England Apple Slump. This is love and made me feel a little at home--I am from Cape Cod, MA. It's a great recipe and I will probably try it soon! ( )

This books focuses on the story of Louisa May Alcott. It explains the difficult life she had as a child because her father had odd ideas. Because of this he lost his job a couple times which meant that they had to move a couple times. as she grew older she found herself writing stories that eventually got published in magazines and news papers. the book also tells about her travels and adventures as well as the book that made her more famous than what she was. She is the author of the book Little Women as well as the sequel Jo's Boys. It states how she based the characters on people that were in her life. I enjoyed this book a lot and would like to acquire this book for the library I will have in my classroom. It shows how you can overcome any obstacle that you are presented with. ( )
