Years after losing his lower right leg in a motorcycle crash, Robert Kull traveled to a remote island in Patagonia's coastal wilderness with equipment and supplies to live alone for a year. He sought to explore the effects of deep solitude on the body and mind and to find the spiritual answers he'd been seeking all his life. With only a cat and his thoughts as companions, he wrestled with inner storms while the wild forces of nature raged around him. The physical challenges wereimmense, but the struggles of mind and spirit pushed him even further. Solitude: Seeking Wisdom in Extremes is the diary of Kull's tumultuous year. Chronicling a life distilled to its essence,Solitude is also a philosophical meditation on the tensions between nature and technology, isolation and society. With humor and brutal honesty, Kull explores the pain and longing we typically avoid in our frantically busy lives as well as the peace and wonder that arise once we strip away our distractions. He describes the enormous Patagonia wilderness with poetic attention, transporting the reader directly into both his inner and outer experiences.… (mehr)

Daring. Thought-provoking. Kull's year in solitude is wonderfully documented and so interesting to follow. He truly endured an amazing adventure, one I feel fortunate to read about and learn from. ( )

Kull has obviously been seeking wisdom and peace in a variety of ways during his life, but this book was his theses for a doctorate at a Canadian university. His study of the effects of wilderness on solitude led him to the coast of Patagonia. There he stayed as a hermit with only limited contact to the outside world for a year. Imagine a cross between Walden and The Mosquito Coast. (He even has a website of the experience which was interesting). The book alternates between excerpts of his almost daily journal entries and chapters where he attempts to define the experience. I loved the journal, but found the other chapters difficult at times. Overall, the book was worth the effort I made to read it and he deserved the degree. ( )

An amazing read, highly advise. Interesting, and intospective. Will give you the urge to bundle up with nature. Kull, does not hide behind any secondry intentions. He is up front and to the point.

Any one intersted in inner peace through nature must read this book. Nature has always healed my soul, I talk a great deal about my own benefit in ,"Above His Shoulders" I ENJOYED THIS BOOK FROM COVER TO COVER. ( )
