"Little Tiger's Big Surprise" is a book that deals directly with getting a new sibling in the family. Sometimes other books dance around the subject or imply that as the message behind the book, however this story by Julie Sykes and Tim Warnes addresses it heads on. The sentences are long in length, however the illustrations are bright and colorful and goes along with the words that it tells the story without the need of them. The book prepares its' young audience by informing them little things babies can do like spitting up, or being messy or loud, and prepares the reader also about responsibility for their new sibling and how to love them when they come into the world. Little Tiger is told by his mother that he will be getting a new baby sibling. Little Tiger is an only child and isn't sure about how he feels about a new child coming into the family. He goes to the jungle to see all of his friends and ask if they can play. However each friend that he goes to is helping their little siblings with a task. As Little Tiger watches the interactions between his friends and their siblings he thinks that he doesn't want a little brother because they will spit up on themselves, get food everywhere, look ugly, never sleep, etc. At the end of his journey he runs into his father who reminds him that he was once a little baby too and one day when the baby is older he'll be happy to have a sibling. When they go back home Little Tiger's mother has had the baby and it is revealed that it is actually a baby sister and not a baby brother that Tiger thought it would be. He gets very excited and wishes for another baby, requesting it to be a boy. Zeige 2 von 2 keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen

I found it a nice and funny read, with lovely illustrations. Very good opportunity to get a child to speak about their uneasiness around a new baby in the family. Don't look for a pre-packed, one-fits-all answer in the book's ending, of course. Not only such an answer doesn't exist; I also found this particular ending very distant from the way children look at the world. Nothing wrong with it: in the end it's just a story, and a good one.
