Masefield was known as an excellent orator. "Poetry" was a lecture given at the Queen's Hall in London, 1931. Essentially, Masefield outlines the accomplishments of all the greatest poets from Aeschylus to Homer to Milton to Shakespeare. It sort of felt like a magic carpet ride through the stories of the Ancients. He uses inspiring language that parallels the original texts and quotes passages verbatim to uphold his central thesis: that poetry is divine. ( )
