Francis A. Schaeffer is the author of Joshua and the Flow of Biblical History. This is not a commentary, but discusses Joshua the man as well as the book he wrote. He was there when Moses wrote the Pentateuch (the first five books of the Bible) and saw everything first hand. He was one of the twelve who went into the Promised Land to explore and he and Caleb were the only two that said they should follow God and continue to take the land. The other ten were afraid and as a result the Israelites wondered the dessert country for another 38 years until the generation that did not believe God died. He led the people in conquest with the help of God. This book is found on the library shelves under the number 222.2/SCH.

After losing this under the sofa cushion for a couple of months, I finally finished it. It was good to read along with Deuteronomy. They partner well. Joshua has become one of my favorite heroes. His unwavering faith and obedience are refreshing and inspiring. Schaeffer has a way of making Bible "characters" come alive. I now think of Joshua as a real man and not just a story. ( )

Joshua was the transitional figure for Israel. He was the first leader after the giving of the Law (Moses being the giver of the Law). He was the person who led them into the Promised Land. It is Joshua that points the link from the Law to the rest of the Old Testament. He was not the Law-giver, but he was the Law-practicioner. ( )
