A child imagines that the noises he hears at night, from a dripping faucet to the whistle of the wind, are really the sounds of adventures in which he plays a sea captain, a policeman, and various other characters.

Great bedtime read! Turning your fears into adventures is a fantastic way to tackle this bedtime challenge. Ending with a calm, quiet, sleeping kid helps too! ( )

Perfect for anyone afraid of the dark or worried about monsters under the bed (and terrific for everyone else, too). The child uses his imaginative power - for good. The adventures he imagines are triumphant. And, yay!, no pirate, but rather an honest and brave sea captain. The little dog is adorable, esp. in the beginning when he's the one feeling anxious.

This also has an interesting note from the artist about his technique and about what it's like to illustrate other author's work. Turning late night noises from fear into a creative adventure, a young boy hears the squeek and creak of his bed and this becomes a treasure chest opening wide.

The sound of thunder becomes a drum roll as the young boy flies through the air on a trapeze, hanging from his knees.

A loud truck whizzing past the house at night becomes a plane that the young boy pilots as he heads down the run way and flies to the sky.

A creative book, this tale demonstrates the power of positive thinking and the ability to overcome fears. ( )

A mischievous boy holding a teddy bear and a rakish dog wearing an admiral’s hat are tucked into bed near a ship’s wheel on the cover of this charming picture book. This image reassures the reader that this book is not a scary story about noises at night. As the little boy is trying to fall asleep, he hears different sounds in the dark. His dog is scared by the noises and clings to his head, but the boy uses his imagination to change each sound into an exciting adventure for him and his teddy bear. A dripping faucet is transformed into the sound of water hitting the bow as the boy sails a ship with his intrepid bear. The racing engine of a truck outside becomes the noise of the airplane he pilots through the sky with his bear by his side. Rumbles of thunder become the drum roll which announces their circus trapeze act. Each page spread features a different common sound and a new escapade. Using acrylic paint with bold brush strokes, Whatley depicts the boy and his buddies lying in his bedroom in rich dark hues and portrays each of their exhilarating adventures in vivid warm colors layered over the darker tones. Engaging rhythmic rhymes compliment these appealing and often humorous illustrations in a timeless story about the power of the imagination. The final sounds are softer and the last scenes become darker as the boy finally falls asleep. Ages three to seven. ( )
