Deze omvangrijke en goed geschreven studie van Herman Pleij is gewijd aan middeleeuwse wensdromen over het volmaakte leven. Centraal staat het droomland Cocagne, de middeleeuwse voorloper van Luilekkerland. In dit land is werken verboden, stromen wijnrivieren, bieden geroosterde vis en gebraden vlees zich kant en klaar aan en is vrije seks met willige partners vanzelfsprekend. Drie teksten over deze droomwereld vormen het uitgangspunt van Pleijs onderzoek. Het gaat om twee Middelnederlandse rijmteksten over Cocagne, bewaard in een handschrift uit de tweede helft van de vijftiende eeuw (Londen, British Library, ms. Add. 10286) en in een handschrift uit de vroege zestiende eeuw (Brussel, Koninklijke Bibliotheek, hs. II.144), en om een vermoedelijk al in 1546 gedrukte prozatekst over Luilekkerland, die is opgenomen in de populaire bundel 'Veelderhande geneuchlijcke dichten, tafelspelen ende refereynen' (Antwerpen, Jan van Ghelen, 1600). Pleij besteedt bij de interpretatie van het materiaal zeer veel aandacht aan de maatschappelijke en cultuurhistorische context. Het boek getuigt van een enorme eruditie en is door Frits van Oostrom in een recensie in Vrij Nederland van 12 april 1997 Pleijs meesterstuk genoemd. De monografie is voorzien van een gecombineerd personen- en zakenregister. (JJK)
