never read an ERB book I didn't like.

This is one of his strongest novels with a touch of Tarzan, Pellucidar, and even John Carter thrown in. The plotting is steady and twists enough to keep the reader off guard, and the native woman that ERB draws this time is strong but wholly compliant to her lover. The reading is consistently strong and deserves a full five star ating from this reader. ( )

A Burroughs non-Tarzan book, with what appears to be his most common theme for these books (and a few of the Tarzan books): A civilized man, sometimes weak and puny, sometimes not, becomes lost in a savage land. Unskilled at first, the man eventually becomes the equal or the superior of the savages of the land, meets a beautiful wild woman who at first holds him in contempt. He eventually wins her respect and then love, and rescues her from the savage men or animals of the land. Most often he settles down with her in the savage land as his mate; occasionally he takes her to the outside world with him. In this book, this is essentially the plot, with the Cambodian jungles as the locale. Entertaining, but not much different from a dozen other Burroughs books. ( )
