"For many years, the people of Britain have enjoyed peace and prosperity under the reign of King Artor and the Union of Kings. Having spurned the despotism of his predecessor, Uther Pendragon, Artor has ruled with a strong sense of duty, goodness and honour. However, Artor is now weakening with age and the seeds of discontent have been sown. Seeking to cleanse the land of Christian beliefs, dissenters need a symbol with which to legitimise their pagan claim and gather malcontents together into a cohesive weapon. These shadowy, subversive elements seize upon the ancient cup of Bishop Lucius of Glastonbury as a way of fragmenting Artor's hard-fought-for kingdom. But first, they must lay their hands on the relic and, in doing so, unleash a force for evil from which murder and violent mayhem ensue. Having killed Bishop Lucius, the harbingers of evil escape with The Cup into Northern Britain where they initiate their rebellion againsgt the rule of Arthur. Arthur is forced to send his trusted servants Bedwyr, Galahad and Percivale on a quest to recover the Grail Cup. Rumour and speculation is rife in the Celtic lands. However it soon emerges that the ultimate threat to Artor's rule lies far closer to home; Artor is betrayed by kin. Celt will slay Celt and the rivers will eventually run with blood" --… (mehr)

The Bloody Cup is the culmination of The King Arthur Trilogy.
MK Hume manages to include most aspects of the legend with her own particular descriptive style, making it dark and exciting, yet keeping away from being overly magical.
Artor is now an aging monarch, with no designated heir. His evil nephew Mordred, king of the Brigantes, is plotting insurrection and stirring up subversion as he works to overthrow Artor and claim the throne for himself.
Most characters from the various takes of the legend make an appearance through one or more books of the trilogy. These include the not always remembered: Taliesan, Gareth, Tristan (Trystan) and Iseult, Nimue, and the warrior twins Balan and Balyn as well as some of the more known including Perceval, Galahad, Merlin and Uther. Without giving anything away, what I particularly enjoyed was how Hume made her own clear take on the characters, much the way Bernard Cornwell did with his very varied characters. Those who have read his books may know what I mean. For example Gawayne, Galahad and Nimue all have aspects of their better known characters, but with some very subtle differences.
The one notable absence was Lancelot, but his character was included in a combination of two other popular figures of legend Gawayne and Bedwyr. I have read books before with one or the other but never both!! Lancelot was not included in the legend until much later anyway and is often associated with one or both of the above characters.
M. K. Hume has created a truly original and compelling vision of King Arthur, his life, his family and his deeds. It's possible that there are readers who try to compare this trilogy to Bernard Cornwell's trilogy. Hume's vision of the Arthurian legend differs quite a lot from Cornwell's vision. Considering how many novels have already been written about this period, it's amazing that the author has managed to deliver such a unique and fascinating view. ( )

I feel sad that this trilogy is now over, just the same as I had when M.K Hume's Merlin trilogy completed. I spent around two years reading these books and I have loved every moment of it. Hume definitely has made a fan out of me! I strongly urge everyone to read M.K Hume's two trilogies if they are in anyway interested about the legends of Arthur and Merlin! ( )

Friends, real friends, are rare and special. We have family, built in, and whether we like them or not is immaterial. Mostly we love them because we have shared history, memories and blood.
But friends are chosen because they fill the empty places in the heart. The best friends stand behind us, protecting our backs in times of trouble.
So Lynne Baker, Roger Hughes, Pauline Reckentin, Robyn Jones and Penny Steel, this book is for you. Pauline convinced me years ago that I would succeed in this endeavour; Roger is my mate, a fellow reader of odd, interesting ideas, and Robin and Lynne and Penny have stood 'in the trenches' with me when times were tough and I tried to slay the odd dragon.
Therefore it is fitting that Artor's most terrible blows and most difficult decisions are dedicated to you all. You've been with me on life's journey, and you have cared for me regardless of my manifold sins.
