This book was a cute story of how friends came to be without trying. It is all about a baby hedgehog losing his blankie. This would be great for Kinder through first grade classes.

Originally published in the UK as One Special Day, this adorable fourth installment of author M. Christina Butler and illustrator Tina Macnaughton's series of picture-books devoted to the doings of Little Hedgehog introduces our erinaceous hero's young cousin, Baby Hedgehog. Left in Little Hedgehog's care, and brought along on a bluebell-hunting expedition in Wild Flower Woods, Baby Hedgehog, with his security blanket firmly in tow, seems at first to be something of a burden - especially in Fox's eyes! - but when Mouse falls down a deep hole, the special blankie (and its owner) come in very handy...

With the red velvety blanket appearing on most pages, The Special Blankie is another fun touch-and-feel title, one which young hedgehog lovers in particular will enjoy. Children who have their own security blanket, or special stuffed toy, will also identify with Baby Hedgehog's concern for his special blankie. These books are really very sweet, with any crisis happily resolved at the end, and the various animal friends all amiably working together. The artwork is colorful and cute. Although not what I would describe as "outstanding" examples of the picture-book, they are solidly enjoyable. And, as mentioned, they feature a hedgehog - so how wrong can they go? ( )
