This novella was the 2010 Boekenweek gift. Zwagerman was an art-critic as well as a novelist. In this quirky tale of how the director of an important Amsterdam museum ended up putting his fist through a thirty-million-dollar Mark Rothko, he has a lot of fun playing around with questions about the respect and monetary value we attach to works of art, and the conflicts between the idea that art is there to be enjoyed and the idea that it is there to be preserved for the future. A book with a subject I do not know the least about: art.

A museum, a director, a farewell exhibition for the temporary closure of the museum, a (valuable) painting and a wayward young artist. Enough ingredients for a short story, enough for a story that is very interesting and that I liked to read.

Know nothing about art, well, nothing about the history, the techniques and that sort of things. I know art in the sense of "I like this or that work of art" and sometimes I'm able to describe why. But the book was about one side of running a museum of (modern) art: fraud and how to make sure nobody finds out that with one piece of the museum's collection has been tempered.... ( )

Een goed geschreven verhaal met een soort detective achtig plot. Helaas bevat het verhaal een paar onlogische wendingen. Wanneer er meer pagina's beschikbaar waren geweest dan hadden de details ook op een betere manier kunnen worden uitgewerkt. Nu blijft de restaurator nogal 1-dimensionaal, terwijl het eigenlijk ook een heel boeiende figuur is. Kortom, het schreeuwt er om een echte roman te worden. ( )
