Great collection of well to read translations (in no-nonsense fluent and pleasing prose english) of sources related to all things religious, nicely catalogued into diverse aspects. As a lay person I read it cover to cover: it appears on a reading list for an introductury seminar. I am sure to recognize its parts when reading further on in related material. Some was familiar from previous studies. It opens a whole world of ideas, not just touching myth and cult, but also society and everyday life, politics and power and is a nice way to travel without expenses in farway places and times and minds. The book is edited in a clear and approachable way and garnished with a few welcome illustrations. ( )
With this book, Emily Kearns aims to provide an up-to-date collection of texts for the study of ancient Greek religion. The previous sourcebook on the subject was published by Rice and Stambaugh, in 1979. Therefore, the need for a successor to this work was great, as in thirty years, our knowledge of ancient Greek religion has considerably expanded, both because the documentation has increased thanks to the contribution of epigraphic evidence and because the interpretation of a number of old texts has changed (p. 1). Coincidentally, almost simultaneously another sourcebook concerning Greek religion was published by Valerie M. Warrior in 2009. Gehört zu Verlagsreihen
