MOTHER'S DAY SURPRISE is about Violet the snake who feels bad about being a snake because she doesn't have arms or legs to help make her mother's day gift. She eventually finds a unique way to show her mom just how much she loves her, and her mom shows her back that she loves her too, just the way she is. This book is cute for the preschool age. It uses animal illustrations to get the message across about being different, and being your own person with your own talents. I think this could be used in a pre-k setting to allow the students to start understanding difference between people, as well as teaching them that everyone has something different to offer. ( )

Genre: through the fantasy of this book, the reader is able to hear the story of the snake. The fantasy is shown the the ability of the snake being able to talk. It is also possible for the snake to talk to other animals, and this fantasy gives life to the book.

Little Kid Reaction: At first our daughter balked at a picture book, but the instant she saw Violet, she cuddled up close to listen. She loved how the story ended and even tried to imitate Violet.

Big Kid Reaction: This is a sweet, sweet story that all moms will love. The illustrations are bright and playful (as is Violet the snake), and the message is clear without being over the top. It's also a nice selection for kids who are getting comfortable with reading. There are lots of simple sight-words and repetition.
