“From Miss Ida’s Porch” is a great eye opener to the little things in life, as well as the knowing your cultures history. From Miss Ida’s Porch is a picture book that many students could relate to because all students should have someone telling them about their culture; just like in the story how the narrator’s Dad tells them the story about actually being able to see Marian Anderson perform in Constitution Hall. Also in this book the narrator say’s that, “Porches are wonderful places for sharing things.” The author is saying you don’t have to be in a special place to tell stories and share with the people you care about, a simple porch will do the trick. This book is about a girl and her best friend who sits on an old lady named Miss Ida's porch day after day and listen to adults tell stories about their past. One tale that particularly caught their interest was the tale about two great African American performers-Duke Ellington and Marian Anderson.

I can relate to this book because my cousins and I use to sit around my grandmothers rocking chair on her porch when we were younger and listen to her tell us stories about her childhood adn the way things were when she was growing up.

I could incorporate this book into an older classroom setting by getting my students to recall a time when they would sit and listen to their grandmother, great-grandmother, etc. and listen to them talk about their childhood or the old times.
