Lisa Alfieri

This novella is a well-written, fun paranormal/fantasy story. Flatline is a non-practicing vampire, whose mission is to save the humans from the evil things that lurk in the shadows. She is still in love with Lucien, her estranged boyfriend and vampire who turned her. Lucien, however, is known as the “evil one” and must be stopped. Flatline struggles with this knowledge and battles her lingering love for the man who took away the life she once knew.

The cast of characters – vampires, werewolves, faeries, wizards, and humans – is lively and entertaining. Lisa Alfieri does a great job of creating the fantasy world, as well as the characters. For me, it leaned a little too much on the lost romance and not enough on other aspects of the plot. But I still enjoyed the story.

The problem I had with this novella, and the reason I can’t give it a higher rating, is because I hated the way it ended. The “ending” left me hanging. There simply was no conclusion. Alfieri is writing a sequel, yet this book should still be able to stand on its own. For me, it doesn’t. It’s like I got to the halfway point in a book and it was taken away.
