After spending years in children's homes since his parents' death, Max has a hard time adjusting to his new life with his grandfather. He can't help but wonder what secret his grandfather is hiding behind a mysterious door down a dark, winding corridor that he was told to stay away from.

When Max manages to get the door open and discovers an enchanted library, he is entranced. The library is filled with magic, talking books. The books, however, are threatened with the possibility of ceasing to exist.

Following a few basic rules, Max begins to read no more than three lines out of each book. When he breaks that most basic rule, though, and unleashes a great evil, Max finds his grandfather and his new life on the brink of being destroyed.

Can Max save his grandfather and keep his new home? Will he be able to find a way to save the magic books while still getting rid of the evil?

THE ENCHANTED LIBRARY is a quick, exciting read filled with adventure, mystery, and magic. The characters are delightful; the plot is intense and well-written. Those who like fantasy, adventure, magic, and libraries will enjoy reading this book.

Max Milford is surprised when his grandfather contacts the children’s home and invites him to come and live with him. Since being orphaned three years ago, all Max has wanted is a family to love him and friends to like him. Only why hadn’t Grandpa been in touch before now, and should he worry about the rumours he keeps hearing about Grandpa?

In The Enchanted Library, Karen Andrea paints an insightful portrait of how a child’s experiences of rejection and loss can leave them bewildered and erode their trust in adults, and how the imagination has the power to transform their reality.

This is a brilliant book all about magic and the power of the imagination. I was lucky enough to catch the author doing a talk and a signing at my son's school recently, very entertaining and a highly imaginative story, very well told. The children were very engaged and - dare I say - enchanted!
A great read aloud book to 7 and above, good for indepenedent readers aged 8/9 plus.

What a gem! A wonderful book about magic and the wonders of the imagination - and a book that encourages reading!
Max is a lonely orphan longing for a family to love him and friends to like him. He gets a surprise call to move in with his grandfather in a rambling old house. To escape the school bullies, Max runs off and discovers a magical library in a long-deserted room at grandpa's house, where the books literally come alive!!! The book characters are brilliant and funny, and offer Max friendship and solace when he's feeling lost and alone. There's an intriguing mystery at the heart of this book, and a ripping adventure that goes at a great pace. Fab illustrations too. I found it hard to put down, and got through it in two days! The enchanted library unltimately helps Max to believe in himself again, and there'a happy ending for all. This is a great story for all the family to enjoy. Highly recommended addition to any serious children's library (or adults!).… (mehr)
