The little narrator is thrilled that it has snowed overnight, and plans the perfect snowman...but plans don't work out quite as expected. Still, the kid loves the imperfect, off-kilter snowman, and calls for Mom to "take a picture of me and my best snowman yet!"

An absolute delight, with bold, clean colors.

Huh. Did not think this was going to be about two ornaments who are terrorized by a cat.

More thought it was about making music.

But interesting. Would have enjoyed having my own marching band reenactment during storytime.

The story follows Strum and Drum as they head off to find their way to the Great Star in the north, making music all the way. They travel through unusual lands and meet others intrigued by their quest. Unbeknowst to them, they are also being watched by a beast with green eyes. A unique Christmas story with a surprising ending. My children swept the book away as soon as I was done reading it, and it will join our collection of Christmas books.

Strum and Drum: A Merry Little Quest
Jashar Awan
Strum strums his guitar and Drum drums her drum on their way to the North, some mysterious obstacles fill their paths... flickering lanterns, bubbles of glass, a silver waterfall, a tiny house, dangerous animals... and a wooden man with a toothy grin warns them of a beast with green eyes lying in wait.
Loved the BEAST!!
You have to read this book with a small person next Christmas

Adorable picture book that young readers will pick up again and again. The illustrations are magical and even though this could be a "seasonal" read - it's so cute that it begs to be read year round. I will definitely be on the lookout for more books by this illustrator!

Strum and Drum was a cute Christmas story both my kids enjoyed. My son loved the anticipation of the characters on their quest, and realizing the surprise of the characters was fun for all.

This is a charming, whimsical Christmas book for early readers (K-2). Two characters on a musical journey have to get around many different obstacles, which often are a surprise to the reader. The lovely illustrations give the book a folktale feel. This book will charm students and is a great addition to early elementary collections.

Cute, whimsical story about two friends that love to play their instruments, a guitar and a drum. These two friends merrily go their way playing their music. They encounter several obstacles on their quest. Beautiful, colorful illustrations complement the story. A book to add to your holiday collection. Great for students in grades PK-2.

I received a free advanced copy of this book from the LibraryThing Early Reviewers giveaway in exchange for an honest review.

Super cute picture book for anyone who ever pretended to imagine what the ornaments on the tree do when no one is looking. Through a colorful folk art style, this book follows the quest of Strum & Drum as they make their way to the great star in the north. Along the way Strum strums his guitar and Drum drums as they encounter a “silver waterfall” which is really tinsel, bubbles of glass which are ornaments and the nutcracker soldier prince. Readers are let in on the fact these are ornaments on the tree when in one page you see the cat knocking them on the floor and a little boy putting them back on the tree to begin their quest again. Great addition to a holiday story collection!

Reviewed for Early Reader.
In the style of a folk tale, two wee ones go on a quest, a merry quest.
The story feels very much like a Christmas story but you are not sure until you come to the end of the story and see that the wee boy and girl are ornaments on a Christmas tree, knocked down by the cat !!!
A delightful story that I can’t wait to share with my grandson. The graphics allow for a folk tale , fairy tale look to the story that adds to the mystery. But at the end we clearly see the cat and the Christmas tree and the ornaments . Well done !

What a cute, magical book to read for the Christmas holidays. Two little musicians set off on a journey thru the forest guided by the Great Star in the North. Along the way, others join them in their merry march. However, they are warned by a soldier prince that if they are too loud, a creature with green eyes will get them. I don't want to ruin the ending, but it is a clever little twist that may make you want to reread the story again. I definitely would recommend this beautiful picture book to anyone. I received a complimentary book in exchange for a review.½

This was a lovely Christmas book. The story was interesting and moved along at a quick pace. The illustrations were beautifully done. I'm sure my nephew is going to love this book, once he realizes that books are for reading and not eating. :)

A lovely little adventure story of two Christmas tree ornaments with charming illustrations. A perfect addition to my book collection of dolls, toys, and other inanimate objects coming to life.

I received a copy of this book thru a LibraryThing Early Reviewer giveaway. I really enjoyed this Children's Christmas story and its surprise at the end. The illustrations are both traditional and modern and include some familiar Christmas characters. Only a moment of scary and then the surprise ending.

Several animals plan to go fishing, but each bemoans their bad luck when they see the next (a black cat, a stork, a raccoon, and a frog). In the end, they each catch a fish and share a feast, dispelling the uncomfortable myths that caused each to be suspicious of another (black cats are bad luck, raccoons are thieves, frogs give warts, storks bring babies). It ends on a laugh ("Wait, what?" Why would I bring babies?) and the final endpaper explains where each bit of lore originated. The cover case art is drastically different from the jacket art - worth a peek! This would be an amazing storytime book for ages 3-5.
