- Helène Aylon, née Greenfield, was born in Brooklyn, New York, to an Orthodox Jewish family. In 1949. at age 18, she married Mandel H. Fisch, an Orthodox rabbinical student, and moved with him to Montreal, Canada. The couple had two children before her husband died when Helène was 30. She became an artist who explored the relationships between her feminism, her Orthodox upbringing, and her place in the world. She investigated her faith and her feminism through installation art and performance art. Her work is in the permanent collections of several museums, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and The Jewish Museum in New York City.
