I enjoyed this short. I was kind of hoping for a different ending but that's just me. Mr. Bates could do wonders with this story if he were to expand it and use an editor to clean up the grammar problems. This is my first book by Bates but I'm very excited to try more of his writing.

Christmas Wish is the story of aspiring design architect, Misha Conway, and barista, Stef Tucker. Written in first person from both character’s povs.

The plot takes place mostly in the coffee shop where Stef works. Misha is so poor, he has no heating or internet connection where he lives and spends the day at the coffee shop to use their Wi-Fi for his work. A designer, he’s hoping to score the job for the holiday decorations at Town Hall. Then maybe he’ll get noticed enough to succeed at his career choice. Stef is a helpful and kind person to everyone, and he takes notice of Misha and often buys him coffee. He’s gay and attracted to Misha, but he’s not sure Misha is gay. Their relationship starts slowly as Stef befriends Misha, and Misha becomes confused about his growing feelings for Stef.

Stef is around twenty-six years old. That sounds about right for the way he comes across. Misha is a year younger, but when he’s introduced in the book he acts and thinks like a much older man. Someone who might be in his mid-thirties. No matter how much the author referred to Misha as younger than Stef, he always came across as older and that disrupted the characters for me because it wasn’t in line with what the author told us.

There’s a lot of monologue in this book, the characters telling us what they think and feel, and too much jumping back in memory for my tastes. Because again, it was written as telling. The one thing the author did that I liked was the designation of each chapter with the character’s name.

This was an ok story, no angst and a fast read. I didn’t like all the telling and even more telling of past memories. I especially didn’t like Misha sounding like a much older man because it always pulled me out of the story. I didn't find the book memorable and pretty much forgot about it after I read it. I won’t be reading this again, but probably others will like it. I can only barely give Christmas Wish>, 3 Stars.
