There's nothing new in this self-help "tough love" book. You could read the title "Get out of your head and into your life" and that's the basis for what he's trying to convey. It's short and to the point and I think it would help some people that need a simple book that may push them into a better life. I like way he presents the material. He probably writes like he speaks with a Scottish accent - quick and to the point. It's exactly what my mom and dad would have done years ago.

He says, "Imagine that you're on your deathbed...and you've got only a few hours to live...You never made a change you wanted. You stayed stuck in the same job, the same relationship, the same overweight body until now. the day you die." He goes on to say that while you are healthy, you have a choice to make changes in your life. What is stopping you?

Why is it that you can tell others this same content and yet, if it comes from a book or therapist, it has more meaning? So I'm sending it to my step-daughter. Maybe it will do her some good if only she will read it.

Just another in a line of books that like to use F*ck and Sh*t in their titles. This one, however, is what turned out to be the bridge to Stoicism. From here I started reading Donald J. Robertson, Massimo Pigliucci, Marcus Aurellius, Epictitus, Seneca, etc.

TL;DR - You're in control of your life, stop wasting it.

Basically a 3 hour long motivational speech about how you are your own problem. No real tips or strategies, just him telling you to get your life together. If you're going to read it, get the audio book because Scottish accent is way more motivating than reading to yourself. LOL

The core idea (less thinking, more doing) is pretty solid, but there wasn't enough substance here for an entire book. However, this is a very quick read and definitely a good kick in the pants whenever you feel like you're stuck in a rut.

LOVED this book. I found the author to be extremely honest and I liked how he was. It made me want to get out of the house and make something of myself. Also Ironically funny.

Unfu*k Yourself: Get out of your head and into your life by Gary John Bishop
Why I picked this book up: I am a Clinical Psychologist and used to use CBT, a lot. and although crude I figured Id read it and see if it is CBT related.

Thoughts: First of all Crude, Vulgar, Coarse. This is my first book that supposedly goes along the same path as You Are a Badas*, and F*ck Feelings comes this book, self-empowerment guide that offers no-nonsense, tough-love approach to help you move past self-imposed limitations.

Gary John Bishop has the answer when you are living a tough life. In this straightforward handbook, he gives you the tools and advice you need to demolish the things weighing you down and become a workable version of yourself. ''Wake up to the miracle you are,'' he directs. ''Here's what you've forgotten: You're a miracle of being.

In summary, this is a fair introduction to a various philosophical ideals: some have been around since the ancient Greeks and some being developed in the modern age: existentialism, stoicism, epistemology, ontology, etc. This author doesn't reference some of these philosophies for further reading but this is understandable as his focus is on coaching you to overcome yourself not to be a literary scholar. For little more than ~$10 and a few hours of reading, give it a shot and see if you learn something. As much as I am going to be critical, the book has its utility and will be useful to some readers.

IMO This author seems to contradict himself throughout the book and complicates his overall message. He is adamant that this is not another self-help book that focuses on positive thinking; however, it is one of the first concepts he introduces. In sum, he teaches that assertive language affects emotions, feelings, and ultimately decision making and that one should engage in healthy inner dialogue. He also later bashes the quote, "Change your thoughts, change your life," calling it bull. Where he is attempting to go with this is to say that actions speak louder than words and no matter what you think, unless you take action, your life will not change.

Okay, this is fine but he took a six-word quote and said it was invalid over the course of ~200 pages. The problem is that he views ideas singularly and criticizes them in isolation; however, if you took any one of his chapters singularly, it would contradict his overall philosophy. For instance, positive self-talk is useless without his later instructions on asserting and acting on them. Overall, I think the overt criticism of other ideas throughout the text followed up with very similar approaches hurt the message Gary was trying to send to his readers. You may find yourself confused or frustrated without having a deeper understanding of some of the philosophies on which Gary touches. In the end, Gary pulls it together but it may take a while to see the differences he is attempting to portray--the book could have been more concise and focused.

Another gripe would be that on page 21 he tells you that if you are easily offended not to read his book and to give it away immediately. The very next page he claims, "I have designed this book to be as accessible and useful to as many people as possible." Really, is anyone proof-reading this book? Look, if you're going to be a self-help coach how can you tell the people who may need to hear your words the most, to shove off? Gary, is writing for the people who he believes need help--that is his profession. Ultimately I see him as a life coach it was fair IMO but SMH too.
In Unfu*k Yourself, Bishop leads you through a series of seven assertions:
I am willing.
I am wired to win.
I got this.
I embrace the uncertainty.
I am not my thoughts; I am what I do.
I am relentless.
I expect nothing and accept everything.

Why I finished this read: As I started this review I found this not my cup of tea.
Stars rating: 2/5 stars 5/17/22

Reading this book was an interesting experience. The author's primary assertions and lessons were things I had already discovered during about a decade's worth of journaling and therapy.

Bishop starts by addressing three factors which we all have in common, and which we can not escape: the conditions of our early lives, the fact that we are hard-wired to prefer the easy and familiar over the risky and new, and that our brains have held on to all kinds of message from earliest childhood in our subconscious mind, and these influence us without our being aware of it.

Then he addresses three negative judgements we've all made and which are part of our subconscious: about ourselves, about other people, and about life itself. The specific beliefs are individual, but Bishop asserts that we all have. This is a very cynical place to linger, but those of us who are stuck tend to believe negative things about one or more of those areas. I found the work of discovering my specific beliefs both sobering and enlightening.

I read the book quickly, eager to get to the most important part: what to do about these things which have held me back. Bishop's answer: instead of making decisions based on the past (the often-negative experiences retained our subconscious), focus on the future. Envision the future you want, and then work backwards. Become the person you need to be to achieve the life you want, rather than defining yourself by the past. Be aware of old habits of thought and emotion when they appear, and then make different choices.

All of which makes perfect sense.

But the reason this book is four stars instead of five is that Bishop doesn't present any techniques for achieving this beyond self awareness and persistence. I'm a huge fan of self-awareness, but given my own experiences, I also know that self awareness is seldom enough to create the desired changes.

There are a number of things a person could do to apply these lessons to achieve change: therapy, a life coach, hypnosis or self-hypnosis to introduce new patterns into the subconscious, working with friends to reinforce the focus on the future and help keep an eye out for old fears flaring up. But a person is unlikely to find everything they need in this book.

That said: this is still a highly readable and insightful work, one which I would recommend to anyone who feels stuck in their life.

Not terrible, and he clearly does the tough love thing, but not always my cup of tea. Then again, maybe that’s the point.

I love this guy. He speaks my language, trucker with a side of rocker, gritty honest and direct. No fluff, no magical chanting, no Yes, there is language, some may say bad words. He's not for the delicate eared ones. He's not here to stroke your ego and tell you what a tiger you are. He's going to make you responsible for you and your choices if you listen. There are 4 sections covering love, loss, fear and success. Who doesn't have some issues in those categories ?
Are you willing ? That question was one of the Aha questions for me. (I really hate that "aha" thing but it works to explain here) I got it from his last book and use it when I'm stalled/envious/sad/ basically lost in my own headtrap. Asking myself this simple question has changed my views on my choices and stopped a lot of round and round whining. This books takes from the knowledge gained in previous books and uses it. Yes, not in some unrealistic way but in a real life way we might all face regularly. It's not all hard edges and coarse talking, there funny humorous points. I've read, listened to his audiobooks and his podcast and I still felt mesmerized by the simple, sometimes brutal truth here. It's time to wake up and open your eyes, read some Gary John Bishop your reality will thank you. I have already ordered the audio version of this. His scottish accent makes a great book even better :P

I have not read the first book in this series: Unfu*k Yourself: Get Out of Your Head and Into Your Life. The message that Gary John Bishop delivers has resonated with millions of people. He helps people identify the problems that keep people from achieving their goals. And he does it in such a no-nonsense, in-your-face, blatantly honest way.

Do the Work: The Official Unrepentant, Ass-Kicking, No-Kidding, Change-Your-Life Sidekick to Unfu*k Yourself is the companion workbook to Unfu*k Yourself: Get Out of Your Head and Into Your Life. In this workbook, Bishop strives to help his readers to take the next step by helping to identify and understand some of the issues that block your personal progress by breaking it down into three categories: Self, People, and Purpose.

Are you living your best life? Do you want to change the direction your life is taking? Are you being honest with yourself? Are you really, though? Sometimes we need a kick in the ass to get ourselves going. And Bishop does just that. I listened to this book on audio, and I really enjoyed it. I think having Bishop's voice in my ear is a real motivator. This book only took a little over two hours from start to finish, but it's also the kind of book that you want to listen to again and again. Especially when those destructive behaviors start to creep back in.

There are so many things we can't control in this life. However, we can control ourselves, our actions, and how we deal with problems. But sometimes we get in our own way of success. Are you ready to do the work? Are you ready to stop making excuses? Then it's time to listen to Do the Work: The Official Unrepentant, Ass-Kicking, No-Kidding.

I loved Un Fu*k Yourself and this one made it even better. His tone works for me, he's not saying anything new he's just saying it crisp and clear. His method is one of self responsibility, woah image being responsible for your own life and not playing. the blame game No one is going to save you, save yourself, lift yourself stop being a fu*king baby. Being stuck sucks, get up do the work and make your life more.
Yeh I loved it.

It was fine. Much more rah-rah self-help than I usually like. Only a few concrete guides or action plans, much more mental work.

I love the stoic philosophies mentioned and I really like this book. The rating of this book should be higher. I think many people lowered their ratings due to lack of citations or scientific backing and poorly phrased wordings/explanation in some. For eg, in the Chapter 'I got this', it took me many re-reads to actually figure what the author meant and I am not 100% sure if 'I get it'.

I also like the fact that the author help to point out some self-help mumbo jumbo which also got into me. For example, self help books like to say 'You deserve it!'.

Also, bad experiences will cause you to work less hard. Stop living in the past and create your future now.

This book is based on stoic philosophy. It is a summarised version of some stoic philosophies.

There is nothing here that is new, but it’s laid out in a very clear way and with an engaging, no nonsense style. If you’ve ever done yoga or meditation, you will probably already know that everyone has negative thoughts and those thoughts are meaningless. Action in spite of negative thought leads to real gains and improvements. That is the gist of this book - if you want to accomplish something, ignore your monkey-mind and just do it.

I was excited to read this book after hearing from many people how "life changing" it was. I found it to be a bit basic but there was definitely some gems I took away from it. I think people who are new to self help or are just beginning their mind mastering journey will get a lot of useful info out of this book but I have read many similar books so a lot of it was redundant to me. I appreciate that the author uses an action fueled approach rather than just telling you to think happy thoughts because that just simply doesn't work for most people. Overall, I enjoyed the book. It's a nice motivating kick in the butt to start doing and stop thinking too much.
