Steve Bloomfield has been based in Nairobi since 2006, reporting from twenty-five countries across Africa. A former Africa correspondent for The Independent, he now writes for a range of publications including Monocle and The Observer, and has also written for Newsweek, GQ, and Esquire.

Fascinating study of football and politics in Africa, seeing how each shapes the other. Take Egypt before her revolution this year. 'There's no real democracy... There's a simmering anger and resentment in the country, particularly among the young...' (p43). Highly recommended...

Sammen med Into the House of the Ancestors er dette den mest balanserte og givende boken jeg har lest om afrikanske forhold. Fokus er på fotballens betydning for Afrika, men det som gjør boken spennende, er måten den viser hvordan fotballen gjenspeiler samfunnet i de 13 landene forfatteren besøker i løpet av boken. Denne bør oversettes til norsk og få en stor leserskare.

This is an interesting book about the enduring and hopeful quality of football in Africa. Many of the stories are quite sad and filled with the tear-jerking realities of life in many war-torn countries and cities. For many people living in these situations, one of the lights in their life comes from playing and watching football matches. In many of the stories there is an undercurrent of hopeful nationalism, people wanting to wave their flag and feel pride for their country, but have yet to have a chance to do so. The coverage of sport is left to a minimum, but is peppered in well enough to keep this a reportage of how football affects the lives of many. My only gripe is the "Americanization" of the language. The readers of this book will be well aware of the term football and petrol.… (mehr)
