I received a complimentary copy of The Beach of the Dead through LibraryThing’s Early Reviewers program; my review is voluntary.

TW:SA. There is a lot of discussion of r*pe, fortunately not detailed.

The Beach of the Dead is the second book in its series, though having only read this one and not its precursor, I can say it stands well on its own. The aforementioned assault occurs in the first book.

The story is interesting with a few unpredictable moments, but the setting is the real star of the show. The beach of Zipolite is described as being a near-magical paradise of unmarred natural beauty.

I found myself frustrated with some of the dialogue as it did not flow smoothly and took me out of an otherwise believable story. The inner monologues of the main character were also frustrating, though probably more realistic; she cannot see past her trauma and guilt to the truth that she committed a crime completely in self defense.

All in all, this was an interesting read, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to have read an advance copy.

I was hooked by the first page. It isn't just a story about murder, but about the complexity of life and love. Compelling, with complex characters. I am going to get the first book, then reread this one while I wait for the conclusion!

A sequel to History of Silence, this novel follows Jane as she flees from her academic life in Texas and the murder she has committed in self defense. Once in Mexico, she becomes Ana and joins a cooperative community and enjoys a new lifestyle with solid relationships. As her reinvented self, her secrets weigh on her even as she finds new love, and there is an omnipresent worry about whether to reveal or past before it becomes known.
