Elizabeth Brina opens up her soul and heart to share the reality of her life as an American who seeks to reconnect to her Okinawan mother. Brina's creative weaving of little-known Okinawan history into her own story is brilliant.

The first part of this is pretty difficult to read; despite feeling more American than Okinawan, the author grew up with so much self-hatred and the resulting destructive, unhealthy relationships she endures are not easy to read about. The history of Okinawa is little-known and deserves recognition, as well as her mother's loneliness and isolation living in a place where she doesn't speak the language.… (mehr)
