I bought this book because it was the personal copy of the artist Mildred Valley Thornton, who reviewed the book in the Vancouver Sun. Generally I knew what to expect, having read two other of Brown's works. Her choice of phrases are dated and often cloying, but there is a charm to some of the poems.

This was a difficult book of poems to like, although the verses grew on me as I read through them. I cringed at the first few poems, with their archaic phrases and mannerisms. However, I gradually became accustomed to her language and enjoyed many poems within their own limited sphere. Some poems that I appreciated were "Bird-Bride," "Harold Infelix," "Laodamia" (a very long poem), "Robin Hood" (the refrain is great), "Unrequited," "The Pedlar," and "The Poet to His Verse." Brown is at her best when writing of mythological subjects, composing narratives, and musing on death. Her usually overlooked poetry deserves a second look.… (mehr)
