"Fifty Egg Timer (Short) Stories" by Richard Bunning My Twist:

Favorite story: “Pray for Mabinty’s Dream”. In a note at the end of the story the author mentions that he has not had first-hand knowledge on the subject. Well, dear Richard Bunning, I have. I have met and heard the stories of people travelling from the south of Africa, on foot, thousands and thousands of kilometers, for years on end, with nothing more than the clothes on their back, to get to the promised land: Europe. Your story is “very real”.

Favorite quote: “There is even a sort of ‘Wi-Fi’ I’ve invented, Why Fly, so that I have creatures to chat to. I pull off flies’ wings, so that they can’t abandon me.” (“Pink’s Reflection”) Dark humor is my cup of tea; need I say more?

Least favorite story: “Generic Hospital TV Drama” -  no matter how short the story was, I couldn’t finish it. If I were a soap-opera kind of ‘gal, I might have liked it.

Least favorite quote: “roasted cat organs are great in sandwiches” - eww, just eww! ("The Fixer - Dinah Paltrow's Job Story").

Aspirin of the book:

Word to writers everywhere: no matter what kind of author you are, what types of books you write, the amount of research that goes into your creation, or how long it takes you to finish a novel, in the end, you have written nothing more than an egg.

As usual, you can read the entire boring review here: Reviews with a Twist.

Another Space In Time, Returns by Richard Bunning is as its title implies, a sequel, and happily its main character, Rodwell Richards, is as good as ever. The story is full of action and seems to me to be a blend of a modern American television police drama and a British mini-series in a reality-shifted English countryside. That is part of its charm, perhaps even more so to an American audience, to whom the details of the vocabulary and the setting make this tale as other-worldly as one set in the Klingon Empire. The first-person philosophical and ethical musings give real depth to Roddy’s character as well as present the reader with the opportunity to pause and wander off through his/her own alternate reality. Being a fan who liked Another Space In Time, my main complaint with this sequel is the slow start it gets from the addition of the backstory. I think that even a new reader could pick up enough information to orient themselves properly on Axa-Goranus from what is presented in the narrative. Let your imagination get inside the head of Mr. Bunning’s creation and you’ll enjoy the adventure.… (mehr)

Another Space in Time by Richard Bunning is a well written tale of a man’s lives. The first life ends suddenly and the second life begins badly. The story blends light sci-fi with an action mystery sprinkled with doses of religion, politics, and philosophy. It is told from a first person point of view in the present tense, a style which at first seems odd. But don’t stop reading because the author uses that style to make the reader very sympathetic to the main character and his predicament. The thought-provoking philosophical what-ifs are balanced by odd, down to earth details and the droll tone of the author and his hero. This one is worth your time. It will entertain and amuse you.… (mehr)
