The book describes part of Ann’s life dedicated to understanding the disturbed mind of serial killers. She was invited to join a pioneering, committed FBI team determined to break new ground in this area and develop a useful template to aid FBI/Police capture similar criminals.
A very interesting, eye opening story with fluid text, conversational and easy to read.
It was well-structured and presented in a logical order with good, progressively complicated examples interspersed.

Ann Burgess, a forensic expert and psychiatric nurse, details her years helping develop criminal profiling. The interviews with various serial killers was very interesting, informative. Quite a lot of detaisl on the horrors the victims indured.

What a great book! I knew who Ann Burgess was before getting this book, so I was excited to read it. And it was worth it! The book is well-written and flows very well. She explained how she became part of the profiling team at the BAU when it began and gave her input as a forensic researcher that specialized in sex crimes.. I think her research and input was so invaluable. She included stories from offenders and different investigations she was involved in. I think it is a great book, one of the best I read this year. I highly recommend it.

I was very surprised by the poor quality of this book. The writing is extremely bad - so bad that it becomes difficult to read in places. Some of the classifications are internally inconsistent, and many of the case studies do not fit the classifications. The manual is also peppered with ideological editorials from the volume's contributors, which is ugly and annoying in a reference text. Am very unimpressed to find this poor quality in the third edition.

Very outdated theories and information, and she leans more toward sensationalizing and creating drama about the topic rather than finding a viable solution. Since writing this book, she has made a career out of the topic, without producing a positive solution. Read 'Erotic Innocence' for a more informed review of this topic.
