Very good coverage of Volney's dinner with Bonaparte in Nice when the young general relates his plans for the conquest of Italy (see Chapter II of hardback edition). Months later in Philadelphia, Volney predicts for other French emigres the unfolding campaign. Each arrival of newspapers from Europe confirms Volney's predictions. He develops a reputation as a "teller of the future," but never tells his friends he'd heard the plan directly from the horse's mouth months before. Also note the Museum in Nice has a large format painting of Volney's dinner with Bonaparte.… (mehr)
