This is a brief history of the criminal gangs of Birmingham from the 1890s to the 1920s. These gangsters were the inspiration for the TV series Peaky Blinders. Carl Chinn is a historian descended from one of the peaky blinders, and is perfectly placed to tell the real story.

Chinn wastes no time disposing of the idea of the peaky blinders shown in the TV series. They were only around in the pre World War 1 era and were only called that because they wore flat caps, not because they blinded people with razors. They were not an organised gang, but an alliance of a few petty criminals in different neighbourhoods of Birmingham.

The apogee of the Birmingham gang wars came after WW1, when soldiers returned home with few prospects, no money and a much better idea of how to organise and discipline themselves. Led by Billy Kimber, they infested racecourses, stealing from patrons, and running protection scams against bookies. Their influence extended to other parts of the country, including London, where they met a serious threat from rivals for their trade.

There are a few familiar names in this book for viewers of the series, such as Kimber and Alfie Solomon, but their real stories are quite different. In that sense, the title of this book is not right, as the people Chinn writes about had nothing much to do with the peaky blinders.

I found this an absorbing read, but I was disappointed that there were no accompanying photos, which I always enjoy seeing in a social history. There are photos of these people out there, and this book could have been much improved by including some of them.… (mehr)

Peaky Blinders, De ware geschiedenis van de beruchte bendes van Birmingham door Carl Chinn

Over het verheerlijken van criminelen zijn reeds vele films en tv-series gedraaid. De bad guys en de underdog kunnen dikwijls op de sympathie van het publiek rekenen. Zo ook in de Britse tv-serie Peaky Blinders. In de jaren 20 van de vorige eeuw zit het Tommy Shelby mee: hij verrijkt zich op slinkse wijze, is populair in zijn buurt en vrouwen vallen voor hem als vliegen. Het romantische idee van de topgangster wordt hier perfect uitgebeeld en ondersteund door stevige hedendaagse rockmuziek.

Maar klopt dit wel? Carl Chinn, kleinkind van een echte Peaky Blinder, gaat in dit boek op zoek naar wat er fout zit in de tv-serie en analyseert hoe het werkelijk liep met die beruchte bendes van Birmingham. Hij start zijn boek met verder in het verleden te graven, in het Engeland van de 19de eeuw. De industriële revolutie bracht toen een ongekende welvaart met zich mee en dat in een toch al florerend Brits rijk. Maar deze rijkdom is er niet voor iedereen: een grote groep van hardwerkende fabrieksarbeiders moest 6 dagen per week vele uren werken om te overleven. Deze uitbuiting in combinatie met een totaal gebrek aan vrijetijdsbestedingen zorgde ervoor dat kleine criminaliteit uitgroeide tot het ontstaan van de straatbendes.

Chinn onderzoekt op zeer gedetailleerde wijze het reilen en zeilen van de ’echte’ Peaky Blinders. Aan de hand van politieverslagen, foto’s en tal van historische documenten toont hij ons dat de serie dikwijls een loopje neemt met de realiteit.

Peaky Blinders (het boek) is een fascinerend naslagwerk dat een boeiende inkijk geeft in de echte criminele wereld. Maar wees gerust: het maakt de steengoede tv-serie niet minder amusant!… (mehr)

Peaky Blinders : the real story : the true history… von Carl Chinn

A good look at gangs and gangsterism on the Birmingham area from Slogging gangs and calms in 1880’s through to the Peaky blinders , Theo extinction and the race course gangs. Intriguing but at times it reads like someone’s sociology essay. It gets better as it goes on and the last third in particular is interesting. Links to the BBC Peaky blinders series have been highlighted which makes things easier for those who have seen the tv series for a while. Really a must only for enthusiasts
